If you want to change the world, then it helps if you first understand it.

That’s why the Green Institute is collaborating with eight experts in political economy to deliver a six week program of lectures and workshops we’re calling Praxis: A course on understanding the economy, and how it dominates our lives.

At Praxis, you’ll gain the skills and tools you need to analyse the Australian and global economy, understand the structures of power in Australia, critique common economic news stories, and apply an economic lens to politics.

The course focuses on the three broad areas that make up the majority of our lives; work, home, and money

Everything from the wage you’re paid, to the cooking and cleaning you do at home, and the debit card in your pocket, are all defined by the same economic and political forces that drive capitalism.

Whether you’re organising electoral campaigns, writing policy, thinking about becoming a candidate, running political strategy, or organising in a trade union, this course is for you.

The Green Institute is committed to making this event as accessible as possible, so if you can’t afford the concession price for a ticket, or access to childcare is a barrier to you, get in touch with us directly and we will do our best to help

What does my ticket price include?

Your ticket price includes five sessions of curated lectures and workshops delivered by experts in political economy, economics and political science, three catered lunches on the Saturday sessions, as well as morning tea on Sunday sessions. To round off the course in week 6 you’ll participate in a pub trivia (our version of an exam!)

What tickets will be available, what do the different ticket prices mean?

Ticket prices are heavily discounted and go towards covering some of the costs of running the course. A standard ticket covers roughly 40% of the cost of Praxis per person. We have created a tiered ticketing structure to ensure no one is turned away for a lack of funds

  • Standard Tickets$120 are our ordinary ticket price for those who can afford it, helping to cover a portion of the operating costs of Praxis
  • Organisation Tickets$400 are aimed at attendees who are able to participate and fund their ticket through their workplace – this might be a union, political party or non-government organisation. If an organisation is sending multiple team members, only one organisation ticket applies and additional team members incur the standard pricing.
  • Solidarity Tickets – $240 are aimed at attendees who are comfortably waged and wish to support the accessibility of Praxis to others in their community by covering the ticket price of another participant who can’t afford it.
  • Student or Concession Tickets – $60 are aimed at unwaged individuals, students, activists, members of marginalised communities, or anyone who otherwise cannot afford the standard ticket.

No one will be turned away for a lack of funds. If the concession price isn’t possible for you or you would prefer to pay in installments please get in touch with us at office@greeninstitute.org.au

What is your refund/cancellation policy?

Places in this course are limited and we want to ensure everyone has an opportunity to take part in Praxis.

Tickets are not refundable except under extraordinary circumstances. If you’re not able to make it, please get in touch with us at office@greeninstitute.org.au. Missed lectures or workshops will not incur a partial refund.

In the case you are unable to attend all of Praxis due to significant and unforeseen circumstances after the 20th of August, we may be able to process a refund. Please get in touch with us at office@greeninstitute.org.au

Can I transfer my ticket to a friend?

Yes, you can transfer your ticket to a friend up until 26 August 2026. Please get in touch at office@greeninstitute.org.au.

Note that Praxis is designed as a holistic six week program, we don’t encourage ‘sharing’ a ticket across the program.

Are there age limits?

Praxis is suitable for attendees aged 16+. If you’re between the ages of 16 and 18, you’ll need guardian or parental consent to attend and participate. Just let us know your date of birth when you buy a ticket and we’ll send you forms for your parents/guardians to complete.

Can I buy a ticket on the day of the event?

No – ticket sales will cease on the 20th August. Places are limited, book now so you don’t miss out!

Can I come for 1 day?

Praxis is designed as a holistic six week program and we strongly recommend attending all sessions.

Will I have to do homework?

We won’t ask you to do homework in a formal sense but between sessions you might be asked to play a quick game, watch a short 10 minute video or make some observations about your neighbourhood. These activities are designed to fit into your ordinary life – filling time on your commute or while you eat dinner.

When and where is Praxis being held?

Praxis is running across six weekend sessions in August, September and October at the UQ St Lucia, Brisbane campus. Session lengths vary depending on the week – some take a lecture format, while others are workshops. You can find the specific Praxis program including dates here, while exact building locations will be released closer to the event start date.

I don’t live in Brisbane, how can I attend Praxis?

Praxis is being hosted exclusively as an in-person event in Brisbane. We plan to run similar events across Australia in the future. If you’re interested in coming along to an event like this in the future sign up for regular updates.

What do I need to bring with me?

Whatever you need to learn and engage! We’ll provide lunch (on the Saturday sessions) and morning tea (on the Sunday sessions), but please feel free to bring whatever snacks you like. Bring along anything you’d like to take notes with, though this isn’t required!

Some weeks may require you to watch a quick video or play a game before attending the session but we’ll let you know ahead of time.

Where can I find information about the event agenda and schedule?

You can find information about the event agenda and schedule here. More information will be released in the coming weeks to participants.

Is there parking available at the venue? How do I get there?

There is parking available at the UQ St Lucia campus – you can find out more information here. We strongly recommend using public or active transport.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

All workshop spaces and lecture theatres booked for Praxis are wheelchair accessible, however not everywhere at the UQ St Lucia campus is accessible. You can read more about accessibility at UQ here.
