A publicly owned supermarket
that would save you 30% on groceries.
A poll by YouGov (commissioned by the Green Institute) has found that 62% of Australians would be more likely to vote for a party that proposed publicly owned supermarkets. And it’s easy to see why.
Households across the country are struggling to put food on the table because Coles and Woolies are pushing up prices to maximise profits. In fact since 2019 Coles and Woolworths have increased their supermarket profits by 58% and 41% respectively, while real wages have gone backwards.
Meanwhile, 79% of Australians have found it harder to pay for food and groceries compared to 12 months ago. 50% of renters have skipped meals or eaten less due to the cost of food.
Labor’s “anti-price gouging” laws haven’t taken a cent off grocery prices, and more regulation and inquiries cannot fix a supermarket designed to put profits before people.
Only a publicly-owned and run competitor to Coles and Woolies will break up the duopoly, stop their systemic price gouging, and make groceries cheaper.
That’s where Fair Go Grocers comes in.
A supermarket that works for you
For $25.1 billion – half the cost of a single AUKUS sub! – the Federal Government would first acquire 200 existing Coles and Woolworths stores, and then build a further 424 publicly-owned and run supermarkets over five years.
Fair Go Grocers would:
- Sell essentials at 30% cheaper than Coles and Woolies by cutting out the duopoly’s profit margin and wasteful spending on things like marketing and exec pay
- Discount all other non-essential grocery items to guarantee an average 22% saving on every shop – that’s $240 a month for a family of four.
- Guarantee Australian farmers fair prices for their produce
Backed by Australians, not corporate greed
A YouGov poll commissioned by the Green Institute has found overwhelming support for publicly-owned and run supermarkets, with:
- 84% of Australians supporting the idea as a way to make groceries cheaper
- 77% agreeing that Coles and Woolies inflate grocery prices to make extra profit
- More than 4 in 5 (88%) agreeing the federal government could do a lot more to reduce the price of food and groceries
