Background

The Green Institute is the official think tank of the Australian Greens. Founded in 2008 by Margaret Blakers OAM and funded by a grant-in-aid from the Australian Government, the Institute is dedicated to the four pillars of ecological sustainability, grassroots democracy, social and economic justice, and peace and nonviolence.

The Institute is led by a Board of Directors sourced from across the Greens movement and around the country. Since inception, the Board has appointed a part-time Executive Director who manages key functions; and additional part-time staff undertake various roles including operational, administrative, financial, communications as well as editor of Green Agenda.

After ten strong years as Executive Director, Tim Hollo has recently stepped down from the Institute – so we’re now searching for the next leader or leadership team.

The Institute is interested in asking big questions about our role in the broader Greens movement: What are we going to do? How are we going to do it? Who are we doing it with? What is a Green think tank?

Process

We are looking for a new person or team to take the Institute through its next phase. We are looking for a strong vision for the Institute’s future activities and how they may be implemented. To that end, we will provide applicants with a confidential briefing pack on the Institute’s finances and operations, then ask them to present a pitch for their candidacy and their approach for the Green Institute’s future.

  1. Expression of Interest

If you are interested in making a pitch, please express your interest by writing to chair@greeninstitute.org.au. The Board will consider the expressions of interest and will send the briefing pack and the scope of the pitches to appropriately qualified and/or experienced candidates who align with the four pillars of the greens movement.

Your expression of interest should include a CV (not more than 2 pages) and a covering letter (up to 250 words) explaining why you are seeking an opportunity to make a pitch to the Board, as well as describing your background with the Greens movement.

  1. Your Pitch

Applicants will be selected to present a pitch to – and interview with – a subcommittee of the Board, as well as provide a written document responding to the briefing pack.

Applicants selected to present a pitch will also be expected to sign a confidentiality agreement in order to receive the briefing pack, which contains sensitive financial and operational information about the Institute.

This EOI process will be open to applications to undertake leadership, management and implementation of the wide range of roles available at the Institute.

Applications may be:

  • from 1 or multiple people;
  • for full or part time employment, or a combination; or
  • for any combination of existing or new activities or duties.
  1. Timing

If you are interested in pitching to the Board, please express your interest ASAP. We are aiming for all applications to be lodged by the end of November 2025.
