Inspiration On Indigenous Democracy – Webinar Recording And Slides

By Tim Hollo May 9, 2020

On May 7, the Green Institute was privileged to have Dr Tjanara Goreng Goreng and Lidia Thorpe speaking with us on Indigenous Democracy Now, as the first of our Covid Democracy series.

The conversation Tjanara and Lidia led us through went from deep spiritual connection to each other and to the land to the tin tacks of activism and parliamentary democracy and back again. It was enlightening, uplifting and inspiring.

The contrast between our current system of governance and the one Aboriginal people developed over millennia could hardly be starker. And it is incredibly clear that we would be far better off, our society would be more equitable, and we would have a far greater chance of reversing the ecological collapse we’ve triggered, if we lived in a system that had learnt from Indigenous democratic principles.

You can watch the full 75 minute webinar below including conversation, poetry and song. The slides presented by Tjanara are available to view via download. And discover the stunning reflection Dadirri by Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr she read towards the end.
